The Vatican Gardens cover more than half of the Vatican's territory - approximately 49 acres (20 hectares). For centuries this place has offered popes and escape from the outside world's demands. They are a place of worship, of prayer and of solitary meditation and their peaceful beauty evokes an emotional reaction in the cynical of hearts. The gardens were created almost by accident in a process that began in 1279 when stone walls were built around the area. This was the idea of the medieval pope Nicholas II, who wanted to protect his fruit orchard and vineyards from the outside world. He also planted a garden and lawn.

In 1447, Nicholas V commissioned the construction of several gardens with dual purpose. They were meant both for the pope's private usage and for official court ceremonies. During the Renaissance and Baroque era the gardens spread and grew more luxurious. They were gradually ornamented with sculptures and beautiful fountains and were filled with a rich selection of flowers and greenery. At the request of Pius IV (1559 to 1965), Pirro Ligorio built "Casina", also known as Villa Pia, a beautiful small villa made for the pope's relaxation and leisure. Paul V (1605 - 1621) decorated the Casina with magnificent fountains. Since 1926 this building has been serving as the seat of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

The only way to see the Vatican Gardens is with organized tours, but these are not very expensive and certainly worth your time.
